How it works

Sixteen words, four hidden groups of four. Pick four that belong together and submit, but watch out for words that seem to fit two groups. Four mistakes and it’s over. Play today’s puzzle or random ones, alone or racing friends, in 11 languages.

  • Sixteen words hide four groups of four. Tap four you think share something, then Submit.
  • Right: the group shows its name and colour. Three of four right: “One away!”.
  • Four mistakes and the game is over. Shuffle the words when you’re stuck.
  • Harder groups score more (100 to 250). Solving adds a bonus, more with no mistakes and a quick finish. In a room, most groups win.

What is GroupBoo?

GroupBoo is our word groups puzzle. Sixteen words lie on the board, and they hide four groups of four: four words that are all trees, say, or four that can each go before “fish”. Pick four words you think belong together and press Submit. If they share a group, they lift off the board into a coloured band with the group’s name. If not, it is a mistake, and you only have four to spend.

The catch is that the words are chosen to mislead. A word often seems to fit two groups, and the hardest of the four is usually wordplay. Find three groups and the last four fall into place by themselves.

A daily word puzzle: group the words, free in your browser

Sorting words into hidden groups is a much-loved word association puzzle: a four by four word game where the fun is spotting the link before the decoys catch you out. GroupBoo gives you a new puzzle every day, the same sixteen words for everyone, plus as many random puzzles as you like. Its categories are written for each of its eleven word languages, not translated, so a Turkish or a Polish puzzle plays with that language’s own words and wordplay.

It is free in your browser, with no sign-up and nothing to install. Each word language has its own leaderboard, with Today, Week, Month and All time views, and in Duo and Group rooms friends join with a code or a link and race the same puzzle. GroupBoo comes in light and dark and works with a mouse, a keyboard or a touch screen.

Who it suits and what it trains

GroupBoo suits anyone who likes crosswords, quizzes and word games and has five minutes for a daily word puzzle over a coffee. It trains vocabulary and lateral thinking: seeing one word in several ways – a bat that flies and a bat you hit a ball with – and holding back until you are sure. Playing in another word language is a good way to practise one you are learning.

Good to know

Each of the four levels has its own colour and mark: Easy groups are apricot with a dot, Medium rose with a triangle, Hard aqua with a square and Tricky graphite with a star, so nobody needs to tell the colours apart. Today’s puzzle changes at midnight UTC, and each word language has its own, one go each. A game left half played comes back where it was after a reload. Shuffle moves the words around as often as you like and costs nothing.

Full guide

How to play GroupBoo

Sixteen words, four hidden groups of four: pick four that belong together, submit them, and find every group before you make four mistakes. A puzzle takes two to five minutes. You can play with a mouse, a keyboard or a touch screen.

The goal: find the four groups of four

Sort the sixteen words into their four groups. The words in a group share something – a kind of thing, a place you find them, a word that goes before or after each one – and every word belongs to exactly one group. You can make three mistakes; the fourth ends the game. Find three groups and the fourth falls into place by itself: the puzzle is solved.

The groups get harder from Easy through Medium and Hard to Tricky. The Tricky one is usually wordplay, such as four words that each go before “board”.

How a game of GroupBoo goes

  1. On the start screen, choose Solo, pick the Word language and choose Today’s puzzle or Random puzzles, then press Play solo.
  2. The sixteen words appear, and the clock starts as soon as they show.
  3. Click or tap a word to pick it, and again to drop it. You can pick up to four.
  4. With four picked, press Submit. If all four share a group, they become a band at the top of the board with the group’s name and colour, and the other words close up under it.
  5. If they don’t, it is a mistake, and one of the dots by Mistakes left goes out. When three of your four share a group, the board says “One away!”. The wrong four stay picked, so you can swap one word and try again.
  6. Trying the same four twice costs nothing: the board just says “You’ve already tried those four”.
  7. Stuck? Press Shuffle to lay the words out in a new order, or Deselect all to start your pick over.
  8. Find three groups and the last four fall into place: the puzzle is solved and your result opens.

Scoring and the leaderboards

Each group you find scores by its level: 100 for Easy, 150 for Medium, 200 for Hard and 250 for Tricky, so the four together make 700.

Solving the puzzle adds 50, and solving it without a single mistake adds 50 more. Each mistake in a solved puzzle costs 40. Speed adds up to 200: all of it if you solve the puzzle within a minute of the words showing, then less and less, down to nothing at five minutes. A clean solve inside a minute scores the most there is: 1,000 points.

If you run out of mistakes, you keep the points of the groups you found and nothing else – 600 at most, so a lost game always ranks below any solve.

Solo scores go on the leaderboard under your player name, today’s puzzle and random ones alike. Each word language has its own board – GroupBoo for English, GroupBoo · Türkçe, GroupBoo · Deutsch and so on – with one entry per player, their best, and views for Today, Week, Month and All time. A perfect solve, and a solve on your last mistake, raise a small cheer.

The result card of a perfect solve: 1000 points, the four groups in their colours and the points list – Groups found 700, Solved +50, No mistakes +50, Speed +200.

How the game ends

The game ends when you find the third group, since the last four can only be the fourth, or when you make your fourth mistake. If you run out, the groups you missed show on the board, easiest first, so you can see what they were.

A moment later the result card opens with your points and what made them, the four groups, the mistakes you had left, your time and your best score in that word language. Press New puzzle for a random puzzle, Share result to copy a grid of coloured squares that shows your guesses without giving the words away, or open the leaderboard. Close the card to look at the board, and See result brings it back.

Today’s puzzle can be played once a day in each word language; after that GroupBoo deals you random puzzles, and a new daily one comes at midnight UTC.

Controls

  • Mouse: click a word to pick it and click it again to drop it. Click Submit when four are picked.
  • Touch: tap a word to pick or drop it, then tap Submit. The words stay four across even on a small phone.
  • Keyboard: the arrow keys move between the words (the first press brings you to the board), and Space picks or drops the word in focus.
  • Enter submits once four are picked; with fewer, it picks the word in focus.
  • S shuffles the words, and D or Backspace deselects all.
  • Submit waits a moment after the words appear, and after each guess while the last one plays out.

Solo, Duo and Group

Solo is today’s puzzle or random ones, and the leaderboard of your word language.

Duo is two players and Group is up to eight. On the start screen, choose the mode and the Word language and press Play duo or Play with a group to open a room. Share its code or press Copy link, and the host presses Start round once everyone is in.

Everyone gets the same sixteen words and races them for up to five minutes. Each board is your own: the players list shows how many groups each player has found and how many mistakes they have made, but never which words they picked. The round ends when everyone has solved the puzzle or run out of mistakes, or when the five minutes are up. Most groups wins; on a tie, the fewest mistakes, then whoever got there first. The host starts the next round with a new puzzle. Room games don’t go on the leaderboard.

Tips for the word groups puzzle

  • Start with the group you’re surest of. Every group found takes four words off the board and makes the rest easier to see.
  • Watch for a word that fits two groups. If you count five words for one group, one of them belongs somewhere else: work out where before you submit.
  • The Tricky group is often wordplay: a word that goes before or after each one, a word hidden inside, a sound. If four words have nothing in common as things, try them as words.
  • Press Shuffle when you’re stuck. The words in a new order break the false links your eye has made.
  • “One away!” is a hint: three of your four are right. Swap one word at a time rather than starting over.
  • Don’t rush for the speed bonus. A mistake costs 40 and a clean solve is worth 50 more, while ten seconds of thought cost you about 8 points.
  • Leave the hardest group for last: once three are found, it falls into place by itself.
